Session 2: Topical VAT Updates

During this session, Gabrielle will review numerous changes which are taking place in VAT to include legislative changes and Court rulings. She will also cover the forthcoming EU measures which will be introduced in July 2021 in relation to new rules for supplies of goods and services together with a review of the “quick fixes” which came into effect earlier this year. With the 1 January 2021 Brexit deadline fast approaching, she will cover some of the VAT implications to be aware of.

Session 3: Farm Tax Issues – Key Areas for Discussion

In this session Declan McEvoy will cover the following topics:

  • Re-Visit the basics including stock relief income averaging
  • Examine the problems that arise on entering a farm company
  • Examine the interaction in farms of capital gains retirement relief between family and non-family
  • Vat 58 and the issues arising
  • Farm partnerships and issues arising
  • How to reduce a farming tax bill
  • Capital taxes -back to basics for the farm

Session 4: Trusts and High Net Worth Individuals

This session will give all attendees the following insights:

  • Back to basics analysis of the different type of trusts that a practitioner may come across when dealing with a diverse range of clients
  • Understanding the concepts of a trust settlor, trustee and beneficiary
  • How trusts are taxed
  • Where trusts are required by law
  • Where the use of a trust may be appropriate and form part of tax planning
  • Where the use of a trust may result in additional tax costs
  • What reporting and filings advisers need to be aware of when dealing with trusts

Rose Tierney – Tierney Tax Consultancy

Rose Tierney is a qualified Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser in both the UK & Ireland. She previously worked as a director with a Big Four firm in Dublin and prior to that several years were spent in London advising businesses on tax planning and transactions.

In 2004, Rose established an independent Tax Practice, Tierney Tax Consultancy and has since then been advising clients in the SME sector and their accountants and solicitors on various aspects of Irish and UK taxation.


Gabrielle Dillon – Twomey Moran

Gabrielle Dillon, a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), is a director of Twomey Moran a boutique taxation firm. She is a former director of VAT consultancy firm, Dermot O’Brien & Associates, which merged with Twomey Moran in March 2020.

She is the regular author of VAT Cases & VAT News in Irish Tax Review and is a member of the Irish Tax Review Editorial Board and she has lectured frequently in VAT for the Irish Tax Institute and other professional bodies. She is co-author of the Institute publication Value-Added Tax & VAT on Property.


Declan McEvoy – IFAC

An AITI Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and Member of STEP-society of trust and estate practitioners, Declan McEvoy is Head of Tax for IFAC.

Declan has extensive experience and expertise in personal and corporate tax planning, estate and succession planning, tax-based investment and financial structuring for family and farm businesses.

A leading authority on farm taxation, Declan was co-author of ‘Farming in a Limited Company – is it right for you?’

Declan is also an Irish Tax Institute Registered Tax Consultant and frequently speaks at national seminars and client workshops for professional bodies, farm organisations, banks, farm groups.


Joe Thompson – Joe Thompson Tax Advisors

Joe is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) having become an Associate of the Irish Tax Institute in 2002. After finishing the Bachelor of Science (Management) Degree course in DIT/Trinity College Dublin, Joe started in a role as trainee tax adviser with a private client tax firm in Dublin and qualified as a CTA in 2002.

Joe gained experience during 2001 while on secondment in Jersey, the Channel Islands where he worked in offshore trust and company administration. During 2004, Joe worked in Australia in the taxation departments of State Street and Multiplex, a quoted property and development company based in Sydney, Australia.

Following a return to Ireland in 2005, Joe worked with three of the top private client tax firms in Dublin including working as an Associate Director of a private client tax firm in the period from 2010 to early 2020.

Joe formed Joe Thompson Tax Advisors in 2020 as a private client tax firm aimed at providing high-quality tax advice mainly to high net worth individuals. Joe Thompson Tax Advisors also provide taxation advice to families, partnerships, trustees, executors, small/medium businesses and other professionals.

Joe has contributed through lecturing and drafting material for the Irish Taxation Institute including the recent Certificate in Capital Taxes for Private Clients course in October 2019 and has presented on the Taxation of Private Client Investments as part of the Irish Taxation Institute CPD Round-Up conferences. Joe has presented regularly to clients and private banks on private client matters.
